Cover Crops in Ohio
Cover crops have the potential to reduce soil erosion and thus help Ohio’s farmers address the harmful algal booms that can occur in Lake Erie and other water bodies. One of the big challenges to the wider use of cover crops in the Midwest is the narrow window to plant cover crops after corn harvest in the fall. This has raised interest among farmers for new strategies and technologies to enable them to “interseed” cover crops when the corn is still in the field. At Ohio State we have begun a research program examining the potential of using a high clearance drill to interseed cover crops into standing corn at the V4-V8 stages.
